Valentine’s Day or Saint Valentine’s Day is celebrated on the 14th of February every year. This festival is celebrated as a celebration of love, friendship, affection and intimacy. Valentine’s Day is said to have been named after a Christian saint named Saint Valentine.
Valentine’s Day was first associated with love and romance in the middle ages. Valentine’s Day was associated with or celebrated to commemorate various Christian saints who were named Valentine. Some of the saints who were associated with this day are Valentine of Rome, Valentine of Terni and another saint who was also called Valentine, but about whom we do not have much information.
While legend states that Valentine’s Day was celebrated to commemorate the death of these saints, there are claims that this day was celebrated by the Christian church in an effort to Christianize the festival of Lupercalia, a roman festival dedicated to fertility and Fanus the god of agriculture. During the middle ages, this festival took on a hue of romance and love when people in Europe thought that birds began mating in the mid of February. The first known Valentine’s Day poem was written in the year 1415, by a Duke of Orleans named Charles, who wrote this poem for his beloved wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London.
It was only during the 17th century AD that Valentine’s Day gained popularity. This day started being celebrated by friends and lovers who exchanged gifts, flowers and hand written letters to celebrate this day. Valentine’s Day began to be popularly celebrated around the seventeenth century. Soon people started giving and exchanging printed notes and cards as a way to express their emotions and feelings.
Nowadays, the modern Valentine’s day is celebrated by lovers and people in relationships by giving each other gifts, flowers and cards; you find cards in various heart shapes and with hearts printed on them in shops, while gifts like heart-shaped chocolates, pillows, doves, figures of the winged cupid or other heart shaped gifts and gifts that symbolize love are commonly exchanged. Couples and lovers celebrate this day by spending this day together having candlelit dinners, going on picnics to romantic locations or just partying out and having fun.
